| Humming birds are another
totem for me. They mean lightness of spirit and quickness of tongue
to me. Anyone who has ever sat outside while seven or more
hummers do battle over the choice feeder spots will know what I mean by
quickness of tongue. The entries that follow are close enounters
that I have had with Hummingbird. Life and release -- death and release.
I have been blessed.
Date: Tue, 5 Aug 1997 18:05:22 I held a hummingbird just
now. She flew into the window. I heard a thump and somehing
made me get up and go see what it was. Puck was just leaping at something.
At first I thought it was a Katydid ....but then the green flash caught
my eye and I realized a hummingbird had crashed into the window. I rushed
outside and scooped her up before Puck ate her. She sat in my hand
for several minutes. I pulled Mama's feeder down and fed her.
Watching her throat move as she drank the sugar water, I felt lightheaded.
I put my forefinger of my other hand under her breast and she actually
stepped onto my finger!! It was so incredible ...this tiny little
bird sitting on my finger. Her eyes kept closing and opening...I knew she
was in shock. I let her eat a bit more and then I put the feeder
back up. Suddenly, a whir of wings and she was gone. Gone to the
top of one of the ceiling fans on the porch and there she sat for
another ten minutes at least. I stood there watching her head
dart around. It was so obvious that she was trying to get her bearings
....to remember where she was and then whizzwhirr she was off as though
nothing had ever happened. I held a hummingbird just now.
Date: Wednesday April 1, 1998 16:75:00 Another hummer in my hand, but this one I was too late for. Went to answer the phone and saw Puck acting strange. Sure enough, a male ruby-throat had hit the window and died. I called Puck off and cradled the little thing. Spoke to him of how happy I am to see he and his kin flit fly through my life. How I remember joy and laughter when I see them. I commended him over to the Lady to fly again. Then I wrapped his tiny body in Spanish Moss and let him drift down the dancing bayou. Date: Friday April 11, 1998 16:55:00 And
this time, I found a male hummingbird wounded. It was laying on the chair
next to Puck. I rescued it from Puck's tender ministrations and like
the female last year, I helped him eat. He finally flew away and
I was glad. But, in less than half an hour, I discovered Puck rolling on
another dead hummer. Another spanish moss pyre down the bayou.... Finally
it dawned on us that he was **catching** them at the feeders. We
have rearranged feeders and chairs and tables and so far so good! (4/20/98).
