The legend of the Oak King and the Holly
King is a big one in my Trad.
But, the Oak King is always killed by the
Holly King. I favored a "kinder, gentler" retirement party. ;-) Here the
Oak King chooses to
step down, but can find no one to aid him.
He must walk the Quarters
asking for a volunteer.
Altar: holly, ivy, poinsettas, pine
Incense: very piney
Cast Circle in the usual manner except do
NOT light Quarter candles.
At each Quarter have a circle member standing
there. The North should be male, but the others will not matter.
HP (wearing the Oak crown): In the dark that
is winter, I find that I
am tired. I no longer wish to be Lord
of the Greenwood, God of the
Underworld. I only want to cross the Veil
and leave another in my
place. Will someone take my place?
Will one place the Holly on his
head and lead the Dance for a full turn
of the wheel?
HPS (looking at Circle): No, my Lord, there
is no one here to take
your place. Try the Eastern Gate. Take this
candle to light your way.
(hands him a candle and lights it from the
Lord and Lady on the altar)
HP walks to the East:
I am seeking He who will lead the Dance
after I am gone. Are you the
one I seek?
East: No, my lord, I am not He. I am the
East where the sun is born
anew every day. I fear that I must stay
and tend to the East. But, will
you spare me some of your flame so that
I may light my corner?
HP lights the East:
The Sun returns, The Sun returns!
Rejoice in the coming light
The Sun will return.
HP walks to the South:
I am seeking He who will lead the Dance
after I am gone. Are you the
one I seek?
South: No, my Lord, I am not the one.
I am the South, the warmth of
your passion, the heat of your desire. I
am the Flame Eternal dancing
in your heart. I must stay here and
tend to the fires of the South.
But, will you spare me some of your warmth
to add to my passion?
HP lights the South (with a kiss?):
The passion is the flame
The flame is the passion
The passion is the Sun returning.
The Sun Will return!
HP walks to the West:
I am seeking He who will lead the Dance
after I am gone. Are you the
one I seek?
West:
No my Lord, I am not the one. I am the West, your emotional self. I
am where the Sun comes to rest. In my arms
I rock the world's heart. I must stay and tend to my duties here. But,
will you spare me some flame so I may light a candle that the Sun will
have a way to find me?
HP lights the West:
So that all may have a light
To guide them safely home
The Sun will return!
HP walks sadly to the North:
I am seeking He who will lead the Dance
after I am gone. Are you the
one
I seek?
North: No my Lord, I am not he. But, I am
the North! I am the door to
the Summerland. If you will take your rest
here, then will you also
guard my door? (at the HP's nod) Then I
will lead the Dance! (discards
black robe to reveal green [or similarly
bright color] robe)For I will be the Holly King! I am the Sun returned
again! Go and take your rest,
Oaken King. Your Lady Crone awaits you.
Let the Holly King lead the
Dance!
The Oak King dons the black robe and trades
places with the Holly
King. If a sword is present, then let it
be traded also.
Holly King to all as he lights his own Quarter:
A song! A song to celebrate my return!
(leads Circle in a dance to "I am the Lord
of The Dance Cried He")
Drumming encouraged as is much joyous noise.
This is a celebration of
the Sun's return to the Wheel.
