While this is not my favorite book on stones, it is one of my top picks of the ones I have. Scott Cunningham presents a clean format with a great index. He offers several different ways to incorporate stones into magical use.

This is a very slim book that I bought because it came with a crystal that I wanted. I have gotten some information out of it, but can't recommend it as a first time book. Just not enough unique information for me.

I highly recommend this one! Everyone who wants to know about stones needs Melody's book. It is a bit New Age-y at times, but the information alone is enough to satisfy anyone. When I move, I do not pack this book. It rides in the car where I can access it as soon as I get to my new place.
4. _Crystal Enlightenment: The Transforming Properties of Crystals Healing Stones_ Katrina Raphaell, Aurora Press, 1985 ISBN: 0-943358-27-2
All of Raphaell's books are worth owning. Sometimes they are a bit deeper than the average beginner might like, but all in all if you are a serious crystal healer, you will want her books. This one is probably better for the beginner.
5. _Crystal Healing: The Therapeutic Application of Crystals and Stones_Katrina Raphaell, Aurora Press, 1987 ISBN: 0-943358-30-2
This Raphaell book is very good for the laying on of stones. I would not recommend this book for a beginner.
6. _The Complete Crystal Guidebook_ Uma Sibley, U-Read Publications, 1987 ISBN: 0-938925-00-8
I love Sibley's book! This is where I got most of my book learning on stones and shapes. She is an excellent source.
7. _The Women's Book of Healing_ Diane Stein, Llewellyn Publications, 1988 ISBN: 0-87542-759-6
I have met and circled with Diane. A nicer witch you couldn't hope to meet. Every one of her books is a jewel. The only thing I will ever complain about with Diane is that she can be a trifle too much on the Dianic slant. But this book is second only to my Melody!
8. _The Crystal Handbook_ Kevin Sullivan, Signet New Age (The Penguin Group),1987 ISBN: 0-451-15491-6
Another book I bought on a whim, but this was a good buy! It is solid in its presentation of information and doesn't go too far out there, if you know what I mean!
